Historic Royal Palaces

The palaces are world famous, but the stories behind their walls are the real treasures.

The Challenge

Historic Royal Palaces look after national treasures such as the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace and Kensington Palace amongst other sites. Whilst these are world renowned places, steeped in rich history, stories and offer unique experiences, younger visitors often found it hard to see beyond the physical wonders of these grand venues and miss out on a more meaningful encounter.

“...beyond their bricks and mortar, it became clear that the inhabitants and their way of life were the most valuable stories to tell.”

The Solution

By looking at the essence of each location beyond their bricks and mortar, it became clear that the inhabitants and their way of life were the most valuable stories to tell. We conceptualised and created ‘Time Explorers’, an intuitive mobile and tablet experience that provides an immersive and engaging digital layer to the palaces. Time Explorers takes the user back in time and places them at the centre of story driven missions. Each are made up of quick-fire, fun and varied challenges that encourage interaction and exploration of the physical spaces. The innovative experience utilises gameplay mechanics like reward, jeopardy, ranking, hints, as well as mystery, humour, character and film to deliver learning outcomes in a hugely entertaining and gripping way.

The Outcomes

Time Explorers publically launched in late 2015 with several Missions located at Hampton Court Palace. Based on it's success further Missions were rolled out across other sites such as the Tower of London and Kew Palace since 2016 and will continue until 2019. To date, measured metrics and user evaluation has scored resounding and encouraging feedback with an average 95% hit rate against audience rating, parental satisfaction, engagement, value, and learning outcomes.
